Born in Binghamton, N.Y. on Jan. 24, 1862, Clarence Ashley Lightner came to Detroit with his parents one year later. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1883. He was admitted to the bar in 1886, and worked as a lawyer in Detroit. He married Frances B. McGraw in 1892 and they had four children.
